Bio | Jorge Simes

Born in Córdoba, Argentina in 1960. Graduated from the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes with a master’s degree in drawing and printmaking in 1985. Begins his artistic career in Córdoba, moving later to Buenos Aires, and finally settling in Chicago, where now lives and works.

In 1982 has his first solo exhibition in Buenos Aires, in Ruth Benzacar gallery, showing fifty etchings printed on his own plant-based hand made papers and installed in charred wooden boxes. This event marks the beginning of his interest in different artistic disciplines, their inherent conceptual and expressive contents, their techniques and ways of presenting artwork, including installations and artist books.

Throughout his career his artistic research, commissions and shows have been realized in diverse disciplines, including paper making, painting sculpture, objects, artist books, performance and photography. An avid reader and traveller, his artistic production has been informed and formed by literary, historical and philosophical currents, as well as observations made during his travels, creating the visual analogies that become his artworks.

His artwork has been presented in solo and group shows in Córdoba, Buenos Aires, Monterrey, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Tokyo, Bern, Paris and Freiburg, among other cities. Among prizes and distinctions can be mentioned: First Prize, National Academy of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires (1982), First Prize, Salón Nacional de Bellas Artes, (1985) Sivori Musuem, Buenos Aires; First Prize ProArte Salón (1986); First Prize-Acquisition V|| Biennial of Maldonado, Uruguay (1987); Gold and Silver Medal, Salón Nacional (1987); New Forms Regional Grant, National Endowment for the Arts and The Rockfeller Foundation (1990); among others. Works are in private collections in numerous countries, and the public collections include: The Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles, The National Museum of Fine Arts, Maldonado, Uruguay; the Flaxman Library, Artist Book Collection, Chicago; the Château CAC, Córdoba, Pro Arte Foundation, Córdoba among others.

Nace en Còrdoba, Argentina en 1960. Egresa de la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes como profesor de dibujo y grabado en 1985. Comienza su carrera artistica en Còrdoba, trasladàndose luego a Buenos Aires y finalmente a Chicago, donde vive y trabaja en la actualidad.

En 1982 tiene su primera exposicion individual Buenos Aires en la galeria Ruth Benzacar, exhibiendo cincuenta aguafuertes en cajas quemadas, impresos sobre papeles hechos a mano por el mismo a partir de plantas. Este evento marca el principio de su interes en diferentes disciplinas artisticas, sus inherentes contenidos conceptuales y expresivos, sus tecnicas y los modos de presentacion, incluyendo instalaciones y libros de artista.

A lo largo de su carrera su bùsqueda artìstica, comisiones y exhibiciones se han llevado a cabo en diversas disciplinas, incluyendo manufactura de papeles de artista, pintura, escultura, objetos, grabado, obra sobre papel, diseño industrial, artes aplicadas, libros de artista, performance y fotografia. Avido lector y viajero, su produccion artistica ha estado informada y formada por corrientes literarias, historicas y filosoficas como asi tambien observaciones hechas durante viajes, creando las analogìas visuales que se transforman en sus obras.

Su produccion artistica ha sido presentada en exposiciones individuales y colectivas en Còrdoba, Buenos Aires, Monterrey, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Tokyo, Berna, Paris y Friburgo, entre otras ciudades. Entre las distinciones obtenidas por su trabajo pueden mencionarse: Primer Premio Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes(1982), Primer Premio Grabado Salon Manuel Belgrano (1985), Primer Premio Salon ProArte, Cordoba(1986), Primer Premio Adquisicion VII Bienal de Maldonado, Uruguay Medalla de Oro y Plata SNBA, New Forms Regional Grant, National Endowment for the Arts and Rockefeller Foundation (1990), among others. Obras en colecciones privadas en numerosos paises, la obra en colecciones publicas incluye: The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires; Museo Sìvori, Buenos Aires; Museo de Arte Americano, Maldonado, Uruguay; Flaxman Library, Artists Book Collection, Chicago; Chateau CAC, Cordoba, entre otras.
